In a proud milestone for Hyderabad’s healthcare landscape, UDAI OMNI Hospital celebrates its Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years since its founding. What began as a modest orthopedic clinic in the by-lanes of King Koti by Dr. Ved Prakash in 1974 has grown into a multi-specialty institution with 150 beds, serving as a beacon of excellence and compassion in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
At a recent press conference celebrating the hospital’s five-decade journey, Dr. Ved Prakash, now 91, reflected on UDAI OMNI's legacy and the core values that have driven its growth. “The erstwhile Udai Clinic has evolved tremendously from its early days as an orthopedic clinic to become a multi-specialty hospital,” he said. "We have played an instrumental role in advancing specialist healthcare in this region."
With over 250 surgeries performed each month and more than 100,000 outpatient visits annually, UDAI OMNI continues to set benchmarks in patient care. Dr. Ved Prakash, known as one of India’s oldest practicing doctors, remains active, spending at least two hours daily with patients and overseeing over 500 surgeries each year. His career spans over 60 years, marked by leadership roles such as the President of the Andhra Pradesh State Chapter of the Indian Orthopaedic Association.
“The true gods in our hospital are the patients, not the doctors,” Dr. Prakash emphasized. “We believe in avoiding surgery whenever possible. Life’s goal should not be limited to making money; a hospital’s role is to serve, not to profit.”
Reinforcing these values, Dr. Raghava Dutt Mulukutla, Chief of Spine Surgery, spoke about UDAI OMNI’s commitment to ethical care and transparency. “We are one of the most ethical hospitals. Patients have the fundamental right to seek second opinions, and we encourage them to do so,” he said. Reflecting on his approach, he added, “Good surgeons know when not to operate; surgery is always the last option.”
Dr. Mulukutla, who previously led both the Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI) and the Orthopaedic Association of South Indian States (OASIS), also discussed advancements in spine surgery in India. “With 400 specialized spine surgeons, the field has reached impressive heights, enhancing patient outcomes and attracting medical tourism,” he shared.
Dr. Udai Prakash, Joint Replacement Surgeon and Sports Injury Specialist, explained that the hospital is committed to delivering the best care as a single, world-class institution, opting against expansion. “Some of the world’s best hospitals remain as single units to avoid diluting their quality of service,” he noted. UDAI OMNI also prioritizes less invasive options, including partial knee replacements, which reduce the need for full knee replacements in certain cases.
The hospital recently joined forces with Incor’s Omni Group, further bolstering its capabilities and reach. Dr. Dutt’s contributions have been recognized in a study by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), highlighting his impact on the field.
UDAI OMNI Hospital has also contributed significantly to Hyderabad’s burgeoning medical tourism industry, treating patients from across India and international destinations such as Somalia, Yemen, Sudan, Kenya, Iraq, the UAE, the USA, Australia, and beyond.
As UDAI OMNI celebrates its Golden Jubilee, it stands as a testament to Dr. Ved Prakash’s dedication to healthcare, compassion, and ethics. The hospital looks forward to continuing its mission of providing patient-first, world-class care for years to come.
