“You Can’t Really Be Strong Until You See a Funny Side to Things” And oh boy, life doesn’t miss a chance to test that theory, does it? Think about it — your boss sends a “circle back” email at 11 PM. You spent two weeks preparing a pitch deck, and the client says “Let’s revisit this next quarter.”
The printer breaks down right before that important meeting. And let’s not forget the absolute classic — pouring your soul into a contract only for the deal to fall apart because someone decided “we’ll park this for now.” What’s the point of losing sleep (and sanity) over things beyond your control? I once worked with a manager who thought sending emails with “High Importance” tags made her look like a leader. Guess what? Nobody took her seriously.
We all laughed behind her back. It was office therapy. And that’s the trick — humor gives you a reality check when nothing else does. When you’re facing a crisis — a client drops out, a colleague ghosts you when you need a hand, or your presentation freezes mid-pitch — you have two choices: 1. Lose it. 2. Laugh it off and move forward. The “strong” people you admire? They’ve mastered the art of finding humor in the ridiculousness of life. It’s not about being insensitive. It’s about survival. They know when to let things slide, make a joke, and focus on what’s next.
Remember that one colleague who always freaks out over minor things? Do they look happy? Strong people aren’t the ones snapping at every crisis. They’re the ones who can laugh through the storm, shrug it off, and still show up with their game face. Lost a deal? Make a joke about the client’s indecisiveness. Stuck in traffic before a pitch? Laugh at how life seems to always pull these stunts at the worst moments. Life will keep pulling the rug from under your feet. You might as well find the funny side of falling on your face.
Because if you don’t — if you take every hiccup as a personal tragedy — you’ll burn out faster than a cheap office coffee machine. So the next time you’re about to lose it, stop. Breathe. And ask yourself, “What’s the funny side of this?” Once you see it, you’re already stronger than half the people in the room.
